This season's Sockets mix delivers on so many levels. First, we have a track entitled "Mood & Dress" from the upcoming Laughing Man EP. It's beautiful and bare in the beginning but then builds to a fully realized, lush sing-a-long. Cotton Candy is a super group in my opinion: Mark Robinson (Unrest!, Air Miami, and Flin Flon) and Evelyn Hurley (Blast Off Country Style!, Hot Pursuit) sing old ads and bring the distintive sounds of each past project into the mix for Cotton Candy. They have a few tracks on the upcoming America Hearts/Cotton Candy split 7" and "Pregnant Beekeeper" is one of them! Macaw's new record, Celadon, will be dropping soon. His remix of Rifle Recoil's "Seas of Bees" is a dreamy slice of what that new Tron soundtrack should sound like. Michael from Les Rhinocéros sent me the band's new recordings a few weeks back. "Johnway" was an absolute standout. The good news for Les Rhinocéros is that this record was desrvedly picked up by an amazing label up in New York... More on that later! True Womanhood are one of the hardest working bands in DC. They keep writing, recording, and performing. "Last Rites" is featured on the new Sockets Records/Environmental Aesthetics 7" coming out in the next month. Hume's latest album, Penumbra, was released at the end of the summer. "Air Mattress Blues" is one of the tracks from those recording sessions, but it was ultimately left off the album. It's a burner! The Skeleon$ Big Band LP is coming out early next year. One of my favorites from that album is "Box of Crayons". The band is on an east coast tour and will be landing here in DC Thursday, October 28th. Skeleton$ main honcho Matt Mehlan did some of the beats for the latest youth hip-hop record, Nine-11 Thesaurus. "Lost Memories" sounds like a Golden Era ballad outtake. John from The Cornel West Theory sent a last minute remix of the group's track "Greed" from last year's record Second Rome. Expect big things from the group in 2011 and make sure to watch the new mini-documentary Sockets just produced along with Sarah Cannon.
